Barry Ryan, Singer of Hit Song 'Eloise,' Dies at 72

Musician Known for 1968 Ballad Remembered for Its Haunting Melody

Twin Brother Paul Penned the Heartfelt Tune That Propelled Barry Ryan to Stardom

British pop singer Barry Ryan, known for his 1968 hit "Eloise," has passed away at the age of 72. The tragic news was announced by his close friend Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens) on social media.

Born Barry Sapherson on October 24, 1948, Ryan rose to fame with his identical twin brother, Paul. After a brief stint in the early 1960s as Barry Davison, the pair adopted the stage name Barry Ryan and Paul Ryan, respectively.

Their breakthrough came with "Eloise," a haunting ballad written by Paul. The song reached the top of the charts in the United Kingdom and several other European countries, cementing their status as pop icons. Ryan's remarkable vocal performance captured the song's melancholic beauty and made it an instant classic.

Despite the success of "Eloise," Ryan's subsequent releases failed to match its popularity. He continued to perform and record music throughout his career, but the shadow of his signature hit loomed large. In later years, he became a respected photographer, showcasing his creative talents in a different medium.

Ryan's passing marks the loss of a beloved figure in British pop music. His legacy will live on through his enduring hit, "Eloise," a timeless anthem that continues to touch hearts with its poignant lyrics and haunting melody.
